Zygomatic Implants: A New Era of Advancements in Implant Dentistry

What You Need to Know About Zygomatic Implants
14 Oct 2022

Implant patients are often required to undergo bone grafting first before proceeding with an implant procedure. This is almost always the case for older people who have been wearing dentures for a very long time. The reasoning behind this is that a complete set of teeth keeps the jawbone stimulated. Without it, this gives way to bone volume loss.

Luckily, there is a new type of dental implant that allows implant placement right away. Meet the Zygomatic Implants!

What Are Zygomatic Implants?

Zygomatic Implants are a relatively new dental treatment designed to replace the entire upper arch of missing, damaged, or decayed teeth. They are the perfect alternative for patients who have been wanting to have dental implants but are not qualified due to severe bone volume loss in the upper jaw.

Zygomatic Implants already remove the need for bone grafting, which older patients have to undergo first before going through the conventional dental implant procedure. In addition, Zygomatic Implants boast a high success rate of over 97%.

What Makes a Zygomatic Implant Treatment Special?

The Zygomatic Implant procedure will secure the replacement bridge holding the teeth together with four standard-sized dental implants. The two front dental implants are tilted. This position allows the front jaw (the stronger and more stable part) to support the bridge, without exposing the patient to the risk of nerve damage.

The two dental implants at the rear end are longer. They are fused into the cheekbone (called the zygomatic bone) where the crowns and dentures will be attached.

What Can You Expect from the Treatment?

  • No More Bone Grafts

As mentioned earlier, you no longer need a bone grafting procedure before having Zygomatic Implants. The time when patients with severe bone volume loss had to have bone grafts first to hold the traditional dental implants is in the past.

  • No Sinus Lifts Required

The same is the case with the sinus lift. Previously, sinus lifts were a must to protect the sinus cavity when placing the implants.

The elimination of other dental procedures is, indeed, a breakthrough. Bone grafts take 6-12 months to heal, and sinus lifts take 6-9 months. You would not have to wait for at least half a year to get your implant.

  • Have A New Set of Teeth Right Away

It is all about the placement. Zygomatic Implants are tilted and securely placed in the patient’s cheekbone. Zygomatic Implants allow the patients to enjoy their new smile immediately.

  • Can Be Used Alongside Traditional Implants

Should you need to replace teeth on your lower jaw, Zygomatic Implants can be used in conjunction with traditional implants. This allows you to have complete lower and upper sets of teeth.
